Just like that, with a stroke of a pen, on August
8, 2005, President George W. Bush approved the "Energy Policy Act
of 2005"! Under this legislation, homeowners are entitled to
receive a federal tax credit worth 30% for a qualifying solar
energy system.
A homeowner who installs a solar hot water heating system for the
home can qualify for a federal tax credit worth 30% of the
installed cost. If for example, you have a $3,000 system
installed, your credit would be $3,000 x 30% = $900.00, a $4,000
installation would be $1,200.00, with the maximum credit being
capped at $2,000.
A Tax credit is not the same as a tax deduction. A federal tax
credit is an actual credit against taxes owed. If for example you
overpaid in taxes, your tax refund would increase by the amount of
the credit, conversely if you underpaid Federal Taxes that year,
the tax credit would reduce the amount of taxes you owe by the
credit amount. The Federal Tax Credit for solar applies to
installations placed in service in years 2006 and 2007.
