SOLAR ELECTRICITY BASICS
Photovoltaics/Solar
Electricity
Solar cells, also called photovoltaic (PV) by solar cell
scientists, convert sunlight directly into electricity. Solar
cells are often used to power calculators and watches. They are
made of semiconducting materials similar to those used in computer
chips. When sunlight is absorbed by these materials, the solar
energy knocks electrons loose from their atoms, allowing the
electrons to flow through the material to produce electricity.
This process of converting light (photons) to electricity
(voltage) is called the photovoltaic (PV) effect.

How your solar electric system works
Sunlight strikes the panels of your solar system and a flow of
(DC) direct current electricity is produced by the solar cells.
The solar generated (DC) electricity is fed into an inverter that
converts it into AC electricity (normal house current). The AC
(electricity) feeds into your main electrical circuit breaker
panel from which it powers your house. Your electric panel is also
connected to a specially installed bi-directional meter, this
meter is connected to the electrical grid, which is the utilities
means of delivering electricity. This set up allows AC electricity
to flow into your home or business. On days when your solar
electric system generates more power than you use, the system
feeds surplus power back to your local utility for others to buy.
